Definition
cGlucose(P) is the concentration of glucose in plasma. The systematic symbol for arterial blood is cGlucose(aP). The analyzer symbol may be cGlu.
What does cGlucose tell you
Glucose serves as the principal energy source for peripheral tissues, except during prolonged fasting. Thus, the blood glucose homeostasis is closely controlled and affected by many biochemical factors.
The liver is the major organ that prevents the blood glucose level from falling in periods of fasting. It does that by producing glucose from the breakdown of stored glycogen or by synthesis from precursors such as lactate, pyruvate, glycerol, and amino acids.
Reference ranges
cGlucose(aP) reference range (adult): 3.89-5.83 mmol/L (70-105 mg/dL)
disclaimer
Clinical interpretation
As both hyper- and hypoglycemia can produce neurological damage, aggressive treatment of deviations in cGlucose is warranted.
Considerations
The measurement of glucose should be performed as soon as possible after sample collection to avoid metabolism in the sample causing false values of cGlu.
